The Difference Between FUE and FUT

The main difference between FUE hair transplants and FUT hair transplants (like the ones that we offer in Newcastle Upon Tyne) is that during FUT, the surgeon removes a strip of donor skin from which to extract individual follicular units to be transferred to the areas of hair loss, whereas in FUE hair transplants, follicular units are excised directly from the scalp. Which technique is most suitable for the patient depends on a wide range of factors.

How The Techniques Work

In both hair transplant techniques, provided from our base in Newcastle Upon Tyne, healthy hair grafts are placed into small incisions into the areas of the scalp affected by hair loss. The surgeon takes great care to distribute and position the incisions to make sure they blend seamlessly with the existing hair of the patient. Another thing common to both techniques is the actual source of the grafts; they are taken from ‘donor’ areas of the scalp, where the hair is genetically programmed to continue growing for life.

FUT Hair Transplants

In the FUT procedure, a strip of hair-bearing skin is taken from the donor area of the scalp, which is usually on the back of the head. This is one of the main reasons why FUT hair transplants are also known as ‘strip surgery’. The long-term donor supply will be influenced by how lax the scalp skin is and by how many hairs there are per square centimetre of donor scalp. In general, FUT hair transplants give access to a greater donor hair yield during a lifetime compared to FUE hair transplants. The strip is then placed under very strong microscopes and the surgical team perfectly divides it into tiny grafts of follicular units comprised of hairs, up to a maximum of four. These grafts are placed in a chilled tissue storage solution until they are transplanted. After this, the donor area is stitched and usually covered by the surrounding hair. After between 10-14 days the stitches are removed, and the donor area heals to form a very linear scar.

FUE Hair Transplants

In FUE hair transplants, the scalp donor area is shaved and follicular unit grafts are excised on an individual basis, using a 0.8mm to 1mm punch; the procedure can be carried out manually by the surgeon or by using a motorised surgical tool. Following FUE hair transplants there will be tiny dot scars on the scalp, but they are so small they are almost unnoticeable to the naked eye. With multiple FUE procedures, more dot scars will show and the hair in the donor area of the scalp is gradually thinned out. This is why there is a limited supply of donor's hair, which means that both the surgeon and patient must take care to ensure that there is adequate donor supply for a long-term plan.

Looking at the before and after shots, and reading testimonials from people who have had treatment, this place looks and sounds like a great place to receive hair loss reversal procedures. I live in the NE and I’m considering getting a transplant in the near future. I will use this establishment.
