What Is Lime Mortar Pointing & Historic Building Restoration In West Yorkshire?

Lime mortar pointing is essential when caring for traditional buildings, particularly those built before the 1900s. Unlike cement-based mortars, which can cause more harm than good, lime mortar is breathable and sympathetic to older brick and stone. By allowing moisture to evaporate rather than become trapped, prevents internal dampness issues and helps prolong the life of the building. In Castleford and across West Yorkshire, many of our customers turn to us for lime mortar repointing, limewashing, and even removing render from Victorian houses, ensuring the original appearance is restored and protected.

Historic building restoration is far more than structural repair, it's a skilled craft that respects the original architecture and materials. It might involve subtle work like render removal or large-scale tasks like stone repair or lintel installation. As a leading heritage builder in Castleford, we bring all of these skills together in one team. Our focus is on preserving the look and feel of traditional structures while addressing modern-day concerns such as damp ingress or failed masonry. Whether you need a damp surveyor, support from damp specialists, or just want to ensure your home is in safe hands, we're here to guide you through.

Why We Excel At Conservation Masonry & Lime Torching In Castleford, West Yorkshire

Our reputation as reliable masonry contractors in Castleford is built on a deep respect for traditional methods and a passion for preserving historic character. We specialise in conservation masonry, carefully selecting materials that match the building's age, region, and construction style. Our skilled heritage builders are trained in techniques passed down over generations ensuring every job, whether it's brickwork restoration, lime pointing, or lintel replacement, is executed with authenticity. For customers seeking a listed building specialist, we offer tailored advice and solutions that prioritise the original structure without compromising safety or longevity.

We're also proud to offer lime torching, a method of insulating older roofs using lime and animal hair, often used in barns and traditional cottages around Castleford and West Yorkshire. This breathable approach helps retain heat without trapping moisture, making it ideal for buildings that need to remain dry while maintaining heritage integrity. Alongside this, our render removal services ensure any inappropriate or damaging modern finishes are stripped back with care, revealing the original surfaces and allowing them to breathe once again. From limewashing to crack stitching brickwork, our aim is always to revive rather than replace keeping Castleford's architectural history alive and well.

The Yorkshire Lime Company in Castleford Reviews

Quality Lime Torching
by Sarah

The Yorkshire Lime Company have been absolutely brilliant as they have just spent 9 weeks working on our Grade II* listed Westgate Unitarian Chapel using hot lime pointing, and lime torching, as well as working with our architects and Historic England who, after inspecting their work said they had never seen such good heritage pointing. I would thoroughly recommend Lee Gillard and his team as absolute experts in their field. The Yorkshire Lime Company went the extra mile to save our chapel wall when we realised the Victorian mortar was destroying the Georgian Bricks!

Professional Chimney Repairs
by Laura

Lee and his team have done a great job repointing our chimney stack and we finally have a dry house after heavy rain. There were numerous delays due to scaffolding, weather, etc, but The Yorkshire Lime Company stuck with us. It was great to see Lee passing on his knowledge to his team.

Excellent Damp surveyors
by Nicholas

Nigel from The Yorkshire Lime Company Ltd provided a detailed assessment of work required to remedy several damp issues affecting various parts of my mother's house. The investigation into the causes of the damp was meticulous and this was followed up with a detailed report listing the necessary steps to address the issues. Very impressed with the level of detail that was provided in the report - Nigel clearly possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience.
